Kai Watanabe – “Acquaintances Through Iteration”

Please be patient. Sketch takes a few seconds to load. Runs the best on Chrome. Safari works as well but is a bit slower.

“Acquaintances Through Iteration” is an interactive painting tool that looks into the different experiences and thoughts of individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What are ways to create proximity when physical intimacy can’t be reached? In what ways can we represent the culmination of our identities in the digital space? By reaching out to people on the internet, and to some of my friends, a collection of images representing how people spent their summers during the pandemic were curated. Each brush is a window into their lives, and through using different brushes, one can “paint” a picture of memories that compounds the unique ways we progress through our different situations.

The images are unmasked through a modified version of the Game of Life, a Cellular Automata algorithm simulating the life of cells. As the different brushes overlap and the cells multiply, the physical behavior of the images suggest the contagious aspect that our experiences hold.

Directions: Click and drag to draw. Press 1,2,3,4,5 to change brushes. | Hold shift and press 0,1,2,3,4,5 to change the ways the cells spread. | Press m to clear the painting | Press [ and ] to change brush size.
