GRUNION

Paige Brunson & Anubha Gupta

The grunion run is a rare phenomenon unique to the Southern California coastline in which thousands of grunion fish come ashore to spawn. This occurs with every springtime high tide with the grunion following the patterns of the full and new moon phases. These light sensitive fish can best be observed with low wavelength red light in efforts to avoid disturbing the run. These fish are so special because they lie at the intersection of three planes of existence — the ocean, the land, and the cosmos. GRUNION explores this relationship through the use of projection onto sand, recreating the experience of observing a grunion run on the floor beneath you through the shifting silhouettes of moon phases.
