Expired New Life recycles traditional media by reviving expired analog photographs with p5.js/creative coding.
Ten street life film photos were loaded into p5.js in pairs and programmed to overlap and pixelate randomly. Five looping videos were created, and six still frames were taken from each. The opacity of all still frames were reduced by 50%, overlapped, and printed on transparent vellum to create five final generative art images. Three prints capture the order and electrical chaos of daily life within and around Akihabara, Tokyo. Two feature architecture, poverty, culture, and rituals by curanderos (witch doctors who use indigenous medicinal practices to heal physical and psychological illnesses linked with evil spirits) in Mexico City.
