Humans of Yuanlin First Market is a documentary photo series made into a digital book. It encompasses photographs of vendors from a local traditional market and tales of the subject captured.
The way that many insects devote their entire life cycle to accomplishing one important task, metamorphosis, reminded me of how vendors in traditional markets dedicate their lives to taking care of their stalls for decades. As to how metamorphosis allows insects to ensure the continuity of their species, the contribution of vendors keeps traditional markets lively, preserving this tradition important to the cultural heritage shared.
Inspired by this connection, the series delves into and reflects on stories of vendors in Yuanlin First Market, a traditional market vital to people from my hometown Yuanlin, Taiwan. It documents intriguing elements and history of the market, visuals of vendors’ working at their stalls, and narratives from interviews. 17 folks who navigate through the changing of time, from welcoming the flourishing scene of traditional markets to facing the bloom of new types of marketplaces, recount how and when they began their lives here, as well as the ups and downs that came along the way.
Like the preservation of the biosphere doesn’t rely solely on one type of organism, to sustain traditional markets as a cultural legacy needs effort from the entire community. Apart from leading the viewers through a visual journey, Humans of Yuanlin First Market reveals the disheartening yet realistic challenges confronting this traditional industry today, and hopefully, brings out the unheard voices critical to the traditional market culture.
